Course Overview
This course introduces pilots and flight crew to Controlled Flight Into Terrain risk. It reviews common CFIT scenarios, weather and visibility threats, terrain awareness, altitude management, approach and descent planning, technology limitations, decision-making, and go-around habits.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, the trainee should be able to:
- Recognize operational conditions and situations that increase the risk of controlled flight into terrain
- Identify common human, environmental, and procedural factors that contribute to CFIT events
- Maintain effective situational awareness of aircraft position, altitude, terrain, and flight path
- Explain the capabilities and limitations of GPWS and EGPWS terrain-warning systems
- Respond appropriately to terrain and obstacle warnings
- Apply the correct escape manoeuvre when immediate terrain avoidance is required
