Course Overview

This course introduces pilots and flight crew to the risks associated with frost, ice, snow, slush, and other contamination on aircraft critical surfaces. It reviews the clean aircraft concept, aircraft performance effects, inspection responsibilities, de-icing and anti-icing awareness, holdover time limitations, and practical decision-making before takeoff.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, the trainee should be able to:

  • Explain how frost, snow, ice, and slush can affect aircraft lift, drag, stall characteristics, and controllability
  • Recognize conditions that can lead to critical surface contamination before and during ground operations
  • Apply the clean aircraft concept when assessing whether an aircraft is safe for takeoff
  • Describe the basic purpose and limitations of deicing and anti-icing fluids
  • Recognize the operational factors that affect fluid holdover performance
  • Apply appropriate procedures for deicing, anti-icing, inspection, and contamination prevention
