Course Overview
This course introduces pilots and flight crew to the hazards of airborne icing. It reviews icing conditions, types of ice, aircraft performance effects, equipment limitations, pre-flight planning, in-flight recognition, escape strategies, and practical decision-making when icing is encountered or forecast.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, the trainee should be able to:
- Explain the atmospheric conditions required for structural icing to form
- Recognize the characteristics and hazards of rime, clear, and mixed ice
- Describe how ice contamination affects wing lift, drag, stall characteristics, and aircraft performance
- Explain how tailplane icing can affect aircraft stability and control
- Identify the purpose and limitations of common aircraft ice-protection systems
- Apply appropriate operational strategies to avoid, recognize, and respond to in-flight icing conditions
