Course Overview
This course introduces the operational considerations associated with operating aircraft from gravel and other unpaved surfaces. It reviews runway condition assessment, aircraft limitations, FOD hazards, propeller and engine protection, takeoff and landing techniques, taxi considerations, and practical decision-making for safe gravel operations.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, the trainee should be able to:
- Recognize the operational hazards associated with gravel and other unpaved runway surfaces
- Assess runway condition, surface contamination, slope, length, and surrounding terrain before operating
- Apply appropriate takeoff, landing, taxi, and braking techniques for gravel operations
- Recognize the risk of foreign object damage and understand procedures used to reduce FOD exposure
- Apply appropriate power, speed, configuration, and control techniques to protect the aircraft and maintain directional control
- Recognize when runway or environmental conditions make a gravel operation unsuitable or unsafe
